What is EDHR?
- Equality of opportunity means creating a fair working environment for everyone, including suppliers, customers and members of the public. Employees will have equal access to jobs and opportunities, and any facilities, such as support, training and pay and benefits are available to all transparently and equitably
- Diversity is about benefiting from working with people who hold different perspectives, bring different qualities to the workplace, have different aspirations, abilities/disabilities and different customs and traditions
- The Human Rights Act 1998 sets universal standards to ensure a person’s basic needs as a human being are recognised and met
What is the Equality Bill and why do we need it?
- The Equality Bill brings together, streamlines and effectively replaces 9 existing laws and 100 statutory instruments, covering everything from race relations to disability discrimination
- When passed, it will be the biggest equality law in UK history
- We need it because: women still earn on average 12.6% less per hour than men; disabled people are more than twice as likely to be out of work than non-disabled people; one in five older people can’t get quotes for car insurance, travel insurance or even hire a car; ethnic minorities are a fifth less likely to find work; 6 out of 10 lesbian and gay school children experience homophobic bullying (Government Equalities Office, 2009)
How can People Resolutions help:
- Planning: Conducting Equality Audits and Equality Impact Assessments (EIA); reviewing and helping to rewrite equality and diversity policies such as Single Equality Schemes (SES) to ensure that your equal opportunity and recruitment policies are compliant with the new legislation
- Prevention: Tailoring equality and diversity training for line managers and customer facing colleagues and ensuring that employees are aware of their obligations
- Resolution: Resolution of individual Equality, Diversity and Human Rights issues and potential conflicts or grievances through facilitation, consultancy, professional mediation and expert investigation
