What are Grievances?
- Everyday concerns, problems or complaints that employees raise with management about work, working conditions or relationships with colleagues
How should Grievances be managed?
- Ensure policies and procedures for establishing workplace conduct (E&D, B&H, Dignity at Work etc) are up-to-date, communicated and understood
- Provide clear channels for employees to voice issues early, safely and confidentially with line managers
- Ensure those line managers are equipped to deal with informal issues or provide the means for them to call in professional third parties for services such as Mediation
- Have the right procedures in place to deal with grievances that escalate into formal stages, if necessary calling in external investigators to clarify issues before they reach tribunal stage
- Make sure that leaders know the business case for managing grievances early
How People Resolutions can help:
- Planning: Agreeing a strategy for conflict prevention and resolution, identifying the resources required and the business case for budget; writing policies, procedures and guidance leaflets for everyone in line with current and future legislation and established good practice; reviewing progress against plans and establishing cost-benefits
- Prevention: Training line managers to identify and deal with potential grievance issues early, adding resources as agreed – such as confidential contacts, counselling, and trained mediators, investigators, HR and OH specialists
- Resolution: Resolution of individual potential or escalating grievances and conflicts through coaching, facilitation, consultancy, professional Mediation and expert Investigation
