Learning and Development

What is learning and development?

  • Learning and development encompasses employee skills (interpersonal and communication), the development of management (including line managers) and leadership skills, and coaching
  • Recent successes have turned attention to developing a learning and development culture; aligning learning and development with organisational strategy; and placing greater emphasis on identifying (training needs analysis) and measuring training effectiveness (evaluation)
  • Advances in learning come from the fields of psychology, sociology, neuroscience, computing and statistics to achieve new insights into organisational performance

How does learning and development work?

Typically there are 4 key stages involved in the learning process:flowchart for learning process

In addition, training programme length is based on a number of factors:

  • Whether the learning is knowledge, skill or behavioural
  • Size of the learning shift (e.g. new knowledge or reinforcing/refining a skill)
  • Delegates’ learning styles
  • Whether the organisation culturally supports e-learning
  • Pre learning and post learning activities
  • Budget, location, timing and business drivers also have an impact
