Mediation in Practice

With mediation increasingly being considered as a vital tool for internal staff to resolve workplace conflict, People Resolutions provide a wide range of mediation training programmes, from awareness sessions for line managers through to training HR colleagues to become fully accredited mediators.

Mediation is a learned skill, and if not employed frequently across varied situations, will naturally diminish over time. This 1-day course is designed to reinforce, refresh and develop the existing skillset of your internal mediators.

We also offer a 2-day version of this course for those who need to engage with practical mediation techniques in addition to reinforcing best practice principles. This is suitable for both managers and HR members who are dealing with challenging people conflicts.

We work in partnership with you to identify the required learning objectives for each course. Typically, this includes a scoping meeting with the necessary stakeholders.  Our standard learning objectives include:

  • Understanding what is mediation and where it fits into the conflict process
  • Recognising the benefits of mediation
  • Awareness of how mediation can work within an organisation
  • Exploring the potential use of mediation within the organisation
  • Understanding the process of mediation and the skills required
  • Recognising the different models of mediation, such as facilitative, transformative and evaluative mediation, and when should they be used
  • Develop your mediation skills in practice
  • Awareness of supporting documentation – Report Closure and Record of Agreement

Prior to training delivery we can also issue a Pre-Course Questionnaire to ensure that we fully understand the issues your employees face and what they would like to achieve during the course. This also helps to raise delegates' engagement in the course.

As part of this course we give your organisation a number of essential documents needed to conduct a mediation, including a Request to Mediate Form, Frequently Asked Questions about Mediation, Mediation Closure Report and Record of Agreement.

Post Course Assessment and Development

In addition to our standard post-course support, we can offer optional developmental coaching, designed to complement the content of the mediation training programme, whereby delegates’ newly-acquired proficiency is assessed and we help solidify the learning through one-to-one feedback.

Normally the trainer will observe a number of hours of live mediation and provide personalised feedback in line with the training standards. This activity is often considered the most valuable part of the training programme, as delegates are coached to their optimal skill level and the organisation has a handle on the respective abilities of their internal practitioners.

Standard Support

To encourage learning to be applied back in the workplace, delegates often need additional support. We offer access to our online hub of key materials relating to conflict management including Mediation, or can place this on your Company intranet or VLE, whichever is preferred. Within our secure knowledge platform, delegates can discuss with and support each other in helping them implement what they have learned in a secure, password-protected forum.

As part of our service, we also offer your organisation a host of standardised mediation templates such as a ‘Request to Mediate’ form and ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ guide about mediation to help fully embed the service and ensure consistency in its deployment.

The cost of our programmes are based on a number of factors such as: the length, volume, number of facilitators required, the specialist subject and whether the course is an open or in-house programme.  

We can also provide Train the Trainer options for high volume, in-house programmes.

Prices for open programmes start from £220 + VAT and for our in-house courses from £100 + VAT per day.
