The HR Professional’s Guide to Mediation – 15th July 2010
With mediation becoming an increasingly popular, Government-endorsed and highly effective ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) tool, we hosted a half-day workshop for HR managers to get to grips with using mediation in their organisation.
During the session, our Head of Practice, Linda Hoskinson, gave attendees a better understanding of what mediation is, when and how to use it (or not to use it!). Our experienced mediator and mediation trainer, Katherine Stoessel, then explained the process of mediation before illustrating the skills involved by leading a live example of mediation.
During the course of a 30-minute acted role-play, Katherine demonstrated how mediation would work within a bullying and harassment situation, and how her experience as a professional mediator was able to produce a positive outcome. Delegates were left with a new appreciation of the psychological component of mediation and had their questions answered on the practicalities from an HR/line/commissioning manager perspective.

Making In-House Mediation Work for You
With workplace mediation being a hot topic this summer, People Resolutions kicked off a season of mediation events with the “Making In-House Mediation Work for You” Webinar.
The webinar, broadcast on 15th June, discussed the role of in-house mediation as part of an overall conflict management solution, how the schemes can help, plus how to embed this type of scheme successfully within an organisation. Speakers included Linda Hoskinson (Director, Head of Practice for People Resolutions) and Jenny Whitesmith (Learning and Development Consultant).
With record attendance, this webinar created some great discussion over the uses of mediation in general, plus in-house solutions in particular and how to set them up.

To follow-up this initial webinar, we also have a seminar on the 15th July titled “The HR Professionals Guide to Mediation”.
To give awareness and guidance on the Fit for Work scheme and what it means for employers, we hosted a free webinar for the HR community through our online arm, HubCap Digital. We drafted in some of the top experts in the field to present: Gail Kovacs, Linda Fletcher and Linda Hoskinson, who all have extensive backgrounds in this area and offered their insight to our listeners.
Within the themes covered, a useful question for everyone was raised: “What are the immediate things every employer can do now to align with the new scheme?” Some of the suggestions put forward:
- Educate line managers on the scheme
- Conduct an Absence Audit to identify hotspots of absence and importantly tackle their causes
- Update company policies in line with the new scheme
- Raise awareness of the relevant parts of the scheme to employees
- Seek advice from GPs, Occupational Health and legal services
